Control to strict standards, public health safety

The main concern of the Thessaloniki Biotoxin Detection Laboratory - which is under the Ministry of Agricultural Development and Food - is the detection of biotoxins in the flesh of all types of shellfish and in seawater, with the aim of developing the future possibility of analyzing toxic plant plankton. Thus, all shellfish will be subjected to tests in the laboratory, before it is made available on the market, in order to ensure it is suitable for human consumption.

The laboratory was selected for funding under the ROP of Central Macedonia for the improvement and accreditation of its infrastructure.  Upgrading of the infrastructure of the laboratory, auxiliary, electronic equipment and of the technical facilities, was required, in order to prepare the laboratory for accreditation.  These needs were covered through the funding of the project by the ROP of Central Macedonia and in particular:  Upgrading the equipment - including the provision of laboratory benches, bookcases, latest technology specialized apparatus and machinery, and additional material-technical equipment for the buildings and the accreditation of the lab. Achievement of accreditation marks the formal completion of the project.

The implementation of this project is a reference point and 'best practice' example for the ROP, because, through its upgrading, the lab provides invaluable benefits to public health, operating to strict standards and implementing pioneering methods.
