45 children with disabilities find expression for their creativity

Since September 2002, the staff of the Centre have been looking after 45 children with mental and physical disabilities, some of them quite serious, providing particular care through sound scientific methods. A social worker, a psychologist, a physiotherapist, an ergotherapist, social carers and technical trainers, start out by teaching the children to look after themselves such that they are ultimately able to integrate into their social environment. Through ceramic, handcraft and copper workshops, the children produce their own products and, with the help of the Centre, sell them.

By placing emphasis on creativity and teamwork, their confidence is raised, while at the same time they gain experience of the production process, a key factor in character-building and social awareness. Finally, the integrated and concerted efforts of the KDAP-MEA of Yannitsa Municipality are topped off with psychological support provided by specialists to the children’s families, aiming to make living conditions in the home environment as smooth as possible.

One particular aspect that highlights the KDAP-MEA social action as an example of good practice, is its range and level of acceptance; every possible opportunity is taken to raise the awareness of the local population: The steadfast participation - physical and material - of local people in all events and their positive response to every invitation by the Centre, are impressive.  An even more significant factor, one which adds particular value to the action, is the tangible awareness and participation of local businesspeople, who support the Centre’s work financially, through donations, food and technical-material infrastructure.  The KDAP-MEA has seven permanent 'sponsors' and manages to secure the help of some 20 businesses, every year.  This fact constitutes the practical expression of a 'social economy' culture by the business world, in a completely local context, with an unquestionably positive impact on development.
