Following two open tenders launched by the Tourism Directorate of the Regional Authority, an integrated programme for the promotion of tourism was carried out. The aim of the programme was to promote the tourism 'product' of Central Macedonia, as multiple destinations, thematically linked and complementary to each other. The promotion of the 7 prefectures that make up the Region of Central Macedonia aims to provide an overall picture, highlighting its comparative advantages, such as alternative forms of tourism, which distinguish the region from other tourist destinations and establish it as both attractive and competitive. In this context, the Regional Authority took part in 11 Tourism Trade Fairs in Greece and abroad, creating printed and promotional material (maps, general and specialized brochures in 9 languages) along with publications in the Greek and foreign press (92 newspapers and tourist brochures). In addition, a multifaceted and targeted approach was adopted towards public opinion-makers, through hospitality invitations to press and TV journalists (65 journalists from 8 countries). A rich photographic archive of tourism resources in the Region was also created. The implementation of the integrated programme to promote tourism in the Central Macedonia Region has increased the attractiveness of the area. As a consequence, the competitiveness of the regional economy has been boosted and the tourism market in the area has been expanded. This is evidenced in the comparative data for the years 2004, 2005 and 2006, concerning arrivals / departures of charter and scheduled flights at the 'Macedonia' airport, as well as border crossings in the Region and overnight stays in tourist accommodation facilities.
