Leading edge technology at the service of royal treasures at Vergina

In order to both preserve and highlight the wealth and multi-faceted cultural heritage of Central Macedonia, the ROP of Central Madedonia funded a project to elevate and restore the Palace of Aegon in Vergina, Imathia County, widely known as the Royal Tombs of Vergina. The work to restore this archaeological site of international renown included completion of the exhibition of treasures found in the royal tombs, thus attributing to the unique finds the prestige that befits them, as well as landscaping the area surrounding the Vaults of the royal tombs.

Following an international contest, the best contemporary international technology in the field of museumology was used for the work of preserving and highlighting the finds, through metallic, waterproof, automatically air-conditioned showcases, crystal  optical fibres, metal sound-proofed partitions, numerous electronic security systems.  In this way, the best possible conditions were secured for the protection and long-term preservation of the finds, which are located in the same area as the tombs, without sacrificing any of the atmosphere that should surround such as exhibition. Simple, almost minimalistic, the thinking behind the exhibition is concentration in a world of shadows, in which light and heat prevail over the ancient objects.

The valuable finds have finally returned, from the Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki where they were on display until recently, to the place from whence they came. The museum and archaeological site of Vergina are already amongst the top 5 most visited in Greece. The integrated project at Vergina is expected to draw an increasing number of visitors, who now have a complete and clear picture of the prestige of the royal dynasty of Phillip 2nd, of the meaning of quality of art in the royal court, through what is an exemplary exhibition and an impressive, revived archaelogical site.
